New Children’s Book Brings Magic, Courage, and Cultural Pride to the Hospital Experience

Chicago, Illinois Jun 30, 2025  - Pediatric intensivist and healthcare equity advocate Dr. Nekaiya Jacobs Pratt has released her debut childrens book, The Magic Bonnet: Zoes Hospital Adventure, a beautifully illustrated tale that blends wonder and bravery with cultural celebration. 

Told through the eyes of young Zoe, this heartwarming story explores the emotional world of children navigating unfamiliar hospital settings. As Zoe clutches her stuffed elephant at the hospital entrance, her worries melt away when Mama presents a magical bonnetemblazoned with a smiling sunthat promises to help her be brave.

The bonnet becomes a symbol of transformation, empowering Zoe through magical moments and cultural affirmations, and helping her realize that courage comes in many beautiful forms.

This uplifting story was inspired by Dr. Pratts Curly Hair Council, a groundbreaking initiative founded to provide inclusive hair care products to hospitalized children. Her work has been nationally recognized by Essence Magazine and Good Morning America, and she was named 2024 Diversity Champion of the Year.

About the Author

Dr. Nekaiya Jacobs Pratt is a pediatric intensivist at a Chicago Children's Hospital and the visionary behind the Curly Hair Council. A graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina, she currently serves as an assistant program director for pediatric residency training and is a passionate advocate for diversity in medicine. Her work has transformed the hospital experience for children across six states. She lives in Chicago with her husband and their miniature pinscher, Reeseand when shes not saving lives or writing, she can be found in her shark onesie watching Shark Week or dancing with her mom to I Hope You Dance.
